How Pain Begins

Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just some of the many conditions that cause pain. This pain usually begins with overused muscles that lead to injury.

Over-used muscles, joints and other soft tissue can become injured in three ways:

  • acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
  • accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • lack of oxygen (hypoxia)

Soft tissue that is strained or damaged through overuse results in a reduced range of motion, loss of strength and pain through a series of events:

  • soft tissue becomes inflamed
  • inflamed tissue sticks together, causing adhesions
  • the body produces tough, dense scar tissue around the adhesion
  • scar tissue binds up and ties down tissue that would otherwise move freely
  • inactive soft tissue becomes shorter and weaker
  • nerves can become trapped, causing numbness and tingling
  • tension on soft tissue causes tendonitis, bursitis and other painful conditions

These chronic stages of soft tissue damage are why so many of us are in pain. At Active Therapeutics, we use a series of hands-on Active Release Technique protocols combined with therapeutic massage to identify and remove muscular adhesions, thereby permanently alleviating the source of your pain..
