Active Release Techniques Now Available in Central Oregon
Active Therapeutics Offers Non-Surgical Relief for Repetitive Stress
Injuries
BEND, Ore. – January, 2006 - Local workers and
athletes seeking non-surgical relief from carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar
fasciitis and other soft-tissue adhesions now have access to Active Release
Technique (ART). Tana Schartz-DeJohn and Mark DeJohn of Active Therapeutics
are the first and only certified providers of ART in Central Oregon.
“Active Release Techniques truly is a breakthrough in the treatment
of injury,” explains Schartz-DeJohn, a licensed massage therapist
with ten years of experience. “Mark and I joke that this might not
be the smartest business model, because our clients keep getting well.”
Indeed, ART can address and resolve many injuries previously considered
untreatable, or considered treatable only by surgeries that offer no guarantee
of permanent success. “Many clients are able to avoid surgery with
ART, and injuries can sometimes be alleviated in just a few visits,”
says Mark DeJohn.
Developed by Colorado chiropractor Michael Leahy and patented in 1988,
ART utilizes principles of friction and tension to actually “tear”
or “shear” adhesions away from muscles, fascia, tendons and
ligaments. Properly employed, its success rate is more than 90%, even
with chronic problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome and rotator cuff
tendonitis. Closer to physical therapy than an indulgent massage, ART
was described in a September 2004 Runner’s World article as “…a
rigorous and interactive form of massage therapy in which a practitioner
applies pressure to the affected area while moving the surrounding muscles
through a full range of motion.” (www.runnersworld.com/article)
Combined, the DeJohns have 11 years of experience providing ART and massage
therapy. They count numerous local athletes among their clientele including
corporate athletes and other individuals who want to regain quality of
life that has been compromised by overuse injuries. Like many other ART
practitioners around the world, the DeJohns provide support to athletes
at Iron Man triathlons. They plan to attend at least two Iron Man competitions
in 2006.
